The Native Prairies Association of Texas – Houston Chapter and CPP (Coastal Prairie Partnership) have teamed up with other prairie groups and experts to offer a full year of classes, field trips, workshops, and events featuring Houston’s Heartland – The Coastal Prairie.

Upcoming Events:

Native Prairie Plant & Milkweed Propagation Workshop – March 5th

Learn the secrets of growing healthy and attractive native prairie plants from two of our region’s best growers – Mark Morgenstern and Barbara Wily.

Location: Brazos Bend State Park, Dining Hall.

All participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for hiking and the outdoors.  A hat and long pants are highly recommended.  Bring a sack lunch.

Tour: Attwater Prairie Chicken Breeding Facility – April 5th
NASA’s Johnson Space Center
Tours at 2 pm – 3 pm & 3 pm – 4 pm.
A guided tour of the endangered Attwater’s Prairie Chicken breeding facilities at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Tours will focus on how the Houston Zoo and NASA are teaming up to breed more of these rare birds and the management of the surrounding prairie.

Prairie Wildlife – Day and Night Workshop: Identification and behavior of prairie birds, pollinators, amphibians, and mammals – April 30th

Katy Prairie (Indiangrass Preserve
Morning Session: 7:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Evening Session: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

This first-of-a-kind workshop designed for novice to intermediate naturalists will provide identification tips for a variety of prairie wildlife and will also give keen insight into wildlife behavior, migration, and more!

Workshop Instructors:

  • Bob Honig – Expert birder and KPC Board Member
  • Dr. Amy Bickham Baird – Mammalogist and Professor at University of Houston-Downtown
  • Dr. Cassidy Johnson – Herpetologist, Professor (Houston Community College/Rice University), and President of Coastal Prairie Partnership
  • Wally Ward – Local authority on butterflies and native bees and KPC Board Member.
  • Michael Eckenfels – Local authority on native bees

Prairie 101 Teacher Workshop – October 29
Lawther-Deer Park Prairie
9:00 am – 2:00 pm.

A special workshop designed to empower local educators {formal and non-formal} to teach about local prairies and wildlife. Educators include not only classroom teachers, but also nature interpreters, outreaching TMNs, homeschoolers, etc. Workshop is taught by Jaime Gonzalez, Katy Prairie Conservancy’s award-winning Conservation Education Director.
